The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus. Harold J. Dyer was born Nov. 9, 1915 in Portland, Maine. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in wildlife conservation at the University of Maine, graduating in 1940. In 1941 he became chief ranger at Baxter State Park. After serving with the 87th Infantry Regiment in World War II, he returned to Baxter as a supervisor.
